Fire Department

The Jeffersonville Fire Department was founded in 1871 and its ranks include full-time, professional firefighters who are member of International Association of Firefighters Local 558.


JFD provides fire suppression, heavy rescue, non-transport emergency medical care and HAZMAT response. The department also responds to all water rescue emergencies.


The Jeffersonville Fire Department serves approximately 52,000 residents in 30 square miles from 5 fire stations.

Safety Town

The new Safety Town is beside Jeffersonville Fire Department Station 2 on 10th Street. At Safety Town, children learn about electricity, fire, water, pedestrian and traffic safety, stranger danger and much more.

National Night Out

Chief Grant along with Firefighters from Station 1 visited the Port Fulton Landing Neighborhood Association family night out/National Night Out, where we participated in the Police vs Fire Waterslide race. Sadly JFD did not come away with the victory this year. We appreciate the Port Fulton Landing families for having us. See you next year!

Fire Prevention Week

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Fire Department fill pools?

No, the Fire Department does not fill pools

What to do with old fire extinguishers?

Option 1: Use caution; discharge yourself and throw in trash. Option 2: Bring to Fire Headquarters, 2204 E 10th Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Can I burn leaves and limbs in City Limits?

No. Put leaves and limbs out for trash.

Fire Pits, are they allowed?

They can be used for cooking, recreational uses and heating, only if using clean wood product. Fire pits should be at least 10 feet away from structures.

Smoke Detectors

The only good smoke detector is a working one. Replace batteries once to twice a year.

Is there a burn ban?

Child Car Seat Installation:

We do no give out car seats. However, we have a few firefighters that are certified in Car Seat Installation, and will teach you how to install properly. Call 812-285-6445 during business hours, or stop in at any fire station.

Fire Merit Commission


The Jeffersonville Fire Merit Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the Mayor’s Conference Room at City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court.


The Fire Merit Commission was created by City Council resolution 2008-R-029 and amended by resolution 2009-R-018, under the authority granted by Indiana Code 36-8-3.5. The Commission is responsible for hiring, disciplinary actions and promotions within the fire department. Under Indiana Code, its five members include appointments by the mayor (two), City Council (one) and International Association of Firefighters Local 558 (two).


The Fire Merit Commission will not consider applications for employment that come from sources other than the city’s Human Resources Department.

Application Process

The Jeffersonville Fire Department is now accepting applications from April 8th through August 2nd, 2024.

Physically:

The job of a firefighter is one of the most physically demanding jobs in the world. It requires high levels of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance. Start now preparing for your CPAT. Making training a daily habit. Physical preparedness cannot happen the night before an exam.


Mentally:

The job of a firefighter is not just being physically fit. Yes, The Jeffersonville Fire Department will train new hires on a vast array of skills, however, getting ahead by familiarizing themselves with tools and skills is vital.

What is the CPAT?

CPAT - Candidate Physical Ability Test


The job of a firefighter is one of the most physically demanding jobs in the world. It requires high levels of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance. The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) consists of eight critical physical tasks that simulate actual job duties on the fire ground. The Jeffersonville Fire Department uses the CPAT to evaluate a candidate's physical ability to perform essential job tasks.


The CPAT is a sequence of events requiring the candidate to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. This test was developed to allow fire departments a means for obtaining pools of trainable candidates who are physically able to perform essential job tasks at fire scenes. A run through of the test course will be available for applicants to familiarize themselves with the test process 8-weeks prior to the actual test date. These practice runs will not only help applicants become more familiar with the tasks and equipment, they may also help applicants identify areas that may need more physical development prior to the final test date.


This is a pass/fail test based on a validated maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds.


The test is physically demanding and requires you to be physically fit to be successful.

Your CPAT certification is valid for 24 months.


Applicants must have a valid CPAT certification when receiving a conditional offer of employment from the Jeffersonville Fire Department.

Writing Test

Step 3

Testing & Interviewing

Written Testing:

The written test is first and takes about 3 1/2 hours to complete. It covers areas such as basic math, reading comprehension, memorization, and problem solving.


Interviewing:

The oral interview can last anywhere from 20-40 minutes. The interviews will be conducted in a virtual setting. Dress as if your were going to a job interview.


When preparing for testing, applicants are advised to consider the following:


  • Be well rested
  • Eat Breakfast
  • Bring a valid Driver’s License
  • Bring a water bottle

Placement

& Hiring

Placement:

Once all testing & interviews are complete, the Fire Merit Board will tally the scores and create a placement list that will be effective until the next round of hiring. Applicants will receive an email with their score and placement.


Applicants can check their placement status at any time by calling Human Resources at 812.280.3897.


Hiring:

When a position opens, the top applicant on the placement list will be called with a conditional offer of employment. At the time of this call, the applicant must have a valid CPAT. After accepting the conditional offer, the process will be as follows:



On completion of the above steps, the applicant will be given a final formal offer of employment and be notified of hire date and recruit school information.

Aerial Climb Test

The candidate will be required to ascend and descend the aerial ladder, fully extended to 105’ at a 70 degree climbing angle and touch the top rung of the ladder.


Dress in comfortable workout clothes, leather gloves may be helpful.

Mental & Medical Exams

The mental and medical exams show if the candidate is mentally and physically able to perform the job of a firefighter. The mental exam takes about two hours to complete. It is followed by and interview with a psychologist. The medical exam is a comlete physical that includes body fat, hearing/vision, treadmill, blood, and urine tests. When complete, the Doctors give their recommendations to the JFD.

Recruit School

All new recruits attend the State approved training academy for 16 weeks. School runs Monday through Friday. Recruits will be paid for recruit school.


The program offers classroom and hands-on training . Physical fitness is a daily requirement. Courses include EMT training, hazardous materials class, fire school, extrication and flashover training, and other tactics used by the JFD. All candidates who pass recruit school graduate as certified EMTs.


Once graduated from recruit school, candidates will become a probationary firefighter, receive their badge, and assigned a shift.
