City courts are permitted under Indiana Code 33-35 and created by local ordinance. Jeffersonville City Court was established on January 1, 1960.
City courts have jurisdiction over civil cases in which the value of a dispute is $500 or less, violations of city ordinances, criminal misdemeanors (crimes for which convictions can receive up to one year in jail and up to $5,000 in fines) and infractions, violations of the law which would not result in jail time. For misdemeanors and infractions, the county's prosecuting attorney can file a case in city court even if the violation occurred somewhere else in the county.
City court judges are elected by popular vote every four years.
