City courts are permitted under Indiana Code 33-35 and created by local ordinance. Jeffersonville City Court was established on January 1, 1960.
City courts have jurisdiction over violations of city ordinances, criminal misdemeanors (crimes for which convictions can receive up to one year in jail and up to $5,000 in fines) and infractions, violations of the law which would not result in jail time. City ordinances are overseen by the City Attorneys and for misdemeanors and infractions, the county's prosecuting attorney can file a case in city court even if the violation occurred somewhere else in the county.
City court judges are elected by popular vote every four years.
Jeffersonville City Court sessions are held at various times throughout the week, for inquires regarding court sessions and times please contact the court at (812) 285-6431. For questions regarding probation matters please contact (812) 285-6436.
