Progress Like Never Before

A City On The Move

Mayor Mike

Lucky, blessed … Call it what you want. I think I’m both.

October marked a pretty big milestone for me: 11 years cancer-free. I am lucky. When my doctor told me at age 42 that the odds were slim to none I would live to see my children grow up, I couldn’t have imagined then the life I have now: two daughters in college, my son in the last year of high school, having the dream job of being Mayor of my hometown. I am blessed.

At least once a year, every year since my doctors declared me cancer-free, I have a battery of tests, body scans and x-rays. When I went for those tests in September, a month shy of my 11-year mark, the doctor saw something he didn’t like. Make another appointment so we can have a closer look, he told me. The wind went out of me and my mind went back in time. I fought the fight once. Could I do it again? I’m living my second chance. Do you get a third one?

As it turns out, everything is fine.  And as unnerving as it was to wait out appointment number two, it was a blessing. Because the time I had between those appointments was time spent thinking about how cancer changed me, what it taught me and how I’ve lived my life since then … to seek happiness, live without regrets and seize opportunity whenever it comes my way.

That’s the way I’ve led Jeffersonville as your Mayor. I see the City in a similar situation ... We’ve been given a second chance. We have changed the way we do business, we’ve turned things around and we ARE seizing every opportunity that comes our way. And it’s making a difference.

There is a buzz in Jeffersonville that didn’t exist before. Officially throwing our hat into the ring as a contender for Amazon’s new Technology Headquarters – which could bring 50,000 high paying jobs to our City has added to that buzz. The job fields and opportunities in Jeff are expanding. A city that once thrived on an ammunition plant and commercial barge building now also finds itself on the forefront of communications, technology and logistics. And regular announcements by companies choosing to locate in Jeff are proof - not just in the Midwest, but internationally - that we are a city growing companies, young professionals and happy families are drawn to.

Jeffersonville is on the move like never before. We’re doing it by keeping a watchful eye on cost of living. We’re doing it by expanding our quality of life with family parks and amenities. We’re doing it by improving our infrastructure. We’re doing it by asking you what you want and by listening to you.

The progress we’re making today ensures our children and grandchildren will always call Jeff home. We are creating a community for the future and we are doing it no holds barred. Because you never know if there’s going to be another chance.
