Following the success of the inaugural Citizen Police Academy, the Jeffersonville Police Department is excited to begin accepting application for the summer Citizen Police Academy tentatively set to begin on July 29th. Due to increased interest in the program, the class size will be increased from 16 to 20 students. Keeping with the inaugural format, students will meet with police officers once a week from 6:30 P.M. until approximately 8:30 P.M. for classroom instruction for 12 weeks.
The feedback received from the inaugural Citizen Police Academy class has been overwhelmingly positive. The police instructors are enthusiastic and committed to developing great relationships with a new class of citizen students through teaching community-based law enforcement topics. The instructors have prepared exciting and informative material to educate the Citizen Police Academy students on vital components of day to day law enforcement activities. The program curriculum will cover a variety of interesting topics including, but not limited to Department Operations and Organization, Patrol Functions, Traffic Control, Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Investigation, Narcotics Investigations, Canine Operations, Special Operations, Use of Force and Defensive Tactics.
Chief Kenny Kavanaugh believes, “This is a clear opportunity for our department to further establish itself as a public partner, sharing the duties of policing with the community in which we serve. The Citizen Police Academy represents a unique chance for the citizens of Jeffersonville and our officers to strengthen community relations. The Citizens Police Academy curriculum provides the citizens of Jeffersonville with instruction from the same officers that serve their community.”
At the conclusion of the Citizen Police Academy, each graduate will participate in a ceremony and banquet to honor their achievement. Anyone interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy can pick up an application at the police department. All applications must be completed and returned by 6:00P.M., July 15th, 2015.
