river breeze more 018This year’s City Pride’s  landscape  contest judging was really tough! Not just because judging day  was horribly hot, but because  entries have  increased  and the final three  landscapes  were very competitive this year. Four City Pride members  traveled all across Jeffersonville’s downtown and suburban neighborhoods to  judge nominated  homes. The winner of the contest were Bill and Carolyn Resch who have lived at 1235 Sportsman Drive in the Northaven Subdivision since 1968. Bill and Carolyn are a homegrown couple who have lived, worked, and raised their 3 children in the Jeffersonville area, with Bill a graduate of Jeffersonville HS and Carolyn a graduate of Clarksville High. Even Bill and Carolyn’s parents were born and raised in Jeffersonville and  Bill and Carolyn’s own children (2 boys and a girl) live in Southern Indiana with their families. To top it off, Bill and Carolyn have been married for 55 years!

Carolyn proudly gives Bill all the credit for the landscaping. She says she is in charge of planting the annual flowers and fall/winter bulbs. Bill cannot recall a specific time when he became a garden bug. He has just always loved working in his yard. He is definitely someone who has that enviable green thumb. When he was recovering from  major heart surgery a few years back, the family was sure they couldn’t even mow the lawn to meet his high standards!

Outstanding elements of the yard include an all season look with emphasis on color, a balance  in the landscape, a huge landscaped side yard, a beautiful and the oldest pin oak in the subdivision, and very unusual  plants. Bill says that he sometimes spots a plant in someone else’s yard and requests a  small sample which he takes to Walnut Ridge for identification. Next planting season, the plant will be growing in his yard!  Each year the Resch’s get compliments on their landscaping and often people will stop and take pictures at peak season. Carolyn has a beautiful display of daffodils in the spring that draw a lot of attention.

This City Pride Landscape Award will be officially presented at the volunteer beautification group’s 10th anniversary River Breeze on September 12th. This is the fourth annual Jeffersonville City Pride Landscape contest in conjunction with the River Breeze Event. The Reschs will be guests at the River Breeze and recognized for their landscape that evening.
