Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore today announced his 2026 budget proposal will fully fund both the police and fire collective bargaining agreements while providing a 2% raise for all employees.
“My first priority is to ensure that we fully fund our obligations to city employees without reducing essential city services,” said Moore. “It’s a lean but balanced budget. Unfortunately, we’ve been forced to make some cuts elsewhere because of the state legislature’s decision to reduce our property tax revenue.”
Moore noted that the proposed $68,981.086 million budget for next year has the summer concert series cut nearly in half as a cost saving measure. There is also a reduction in the public arts line by $177,000 while eliminating the Steam Boat Nights festival and closing the Employee Health Center for a total savings of $500,000. It also has reductions in the amount available for capital purchases next year of approximately $500,000.
“The budget is based on very conservative revenue estimates given to us by the state,” said City Controller Heather Metcalf. “Usually those estimates are lower than actual revenue realized but we feel it’s wise to go with those estimates to be safe.”
Metcalf also noted the budget is based upon projected revenue of $69,764,999.00 including a $1.7 million contribution from River Ridge. River Ridge is partially located within Jeffersonville but businesses located in the commerce park do not pay property taxes.
Moore said despite the financial constraints mandated by the state legislature, he remains committed more than ever to fiscal responsibility. “We’ve been very good stewards of tax dollars over the years,” said Moore who took office in 2012. “Jeffersonville’s share of the property tax rate is 18% lower than it was 13 years ago.
“One reason we’ve kept our spending in check is because my administration has forged a strong relationship with the City Council over the years to foster the shared goal of making government leaner and more efficient,” said Moore.
