A completely new sign standard has been adopted by the City of Jeffersonville effective April 8, 2015 (2015-OR-21). The new sign standards replace the previous General, Temporary, and Permanent Sign Standards of the Jeffersonville Zoning Ordinance. Mobile Vendors and Food Trucks

 

An ordinance regarding the operation of mobile vendors and food trucks in the City passed last year (2014-OR-26) which requires that all persons operating these types of businesses must submit an application to the Department of Planning and Zoning a minimum of 10 business days before desired date of conducting business. An application is available in the table below. Please contact our office to discuss the full regulations for operating this business in the City of Jeffersonville before securing equipment or investing in this venture.

About the Department

The Jeffersonville Planning and Zoning Department enforces the city's Zoning Ordinance, Comprehensive Plan, Subdivision Control Ordinance and operates under Indiana Codes 36-7-4, 36-7-10 and 36-7-10.1.

The online zoning map is for advisory purposes only. Planning and Zoning staff should always be consulted before initiating a project that may be affected by a specific zoning regulation.

The Jeffersonville Planning and Zoning Department provides staff support for the city's Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, serves as a resource to citizens and developers who need assistance with the city's development and zoning controls and provides code enforcement, to ensure that neighborhoods remain safe and to help protect against the loss of property values due to blight.

2014 Annual Report Released

The department is excited to release the annual report for 2014 which highlights the many activities planning staff and code enforcement have been engaged in last year. Some exciting new additions to the annual report include trends we are seeing and factors which the department are looking at which will impact the City in the future. PLANNING PROJECTS & NEWS

NEW Sign Standards

A completely new sign standard has been adopted by the City of Jeffersonville (2015-OR-21). The new sign standards replace the previous General, Temporary, and Permanent Sign Standards of the Jeffersonville Zoning Ordinance.

To accompany these new standards we have a created the following materials for download.

  • New Sign Standards– The newly adopted sign standards.

  • Graphic Guide– Displaying the new height and size standards alongside the old standards per zoning district.

  • Permanent Sign Table– This provides a summary of the permitted signs and their associated sizes for each zoning district.

 

Mobile Vendor & Food Truck

 

An ordinance regarding the operation of mobile vendors and food trucks in the City passed last year (2014-OR-26) which requires that all persons operating these types of businesses must submit an application to the Department of Planning and Zoning a minimum of 10 business days before desired date of conducting business. An application is available in the table below. Please contact our office to discuss the full regulations for operating this business in the City of Jeffersonville before securing equipment or investing in this venture.

The new ordinance requires:

  • Each person conducting business as a transient merchant must make an application - no license will be granted in the name of a business.
  • No advertising shall be allowed on the street or sidewalk
  • If located on a sidewalk, a minimum clearance of five feet shall be maintaned
  • Transient merchants shall not operate within the portion of improved street right-of-way designed for vehicular traffice or parking. Any application ot locate in the stret right-of-way shall require approval by the Firector of Planning and Zoning
  • Transient merchants are prohibited in parks and in residentially zoned areas
  • All transient merchants must comply with all Clark County Health Department requirements
  • If operating on private property, applicant shall submit a copy of written approval from the property owner with city license application
  • No transient merchant shall operate in an area exceeeding 15 feet in length.

Comprehensive Plan Update

A revision of the comprehensive plan is in progress and should be completed by the summer of 2015.

  • The first public meeting was held on November 12, 2014, and the presentation is available HERE.  Demographic data of Jeffersonville that will be used in the comprehensive plan can be viewed HERE.  

Moratorium on Billboards and Electronic Signs

The moratorium on LED signs has been lifted by the passing of the new sign standards ordinance. They will be referred to as EVMS (Electronic Variable Message Signs) and are permitted on ground signs in the City of Jeffersonville so long as they meet the list of standards inSection 7.17 General Sign Standards: Subsection (F.) Electronic Variable Message Signs within the new sign ordinance.

The moratorium on billboards has expired with the new sign standards ordinance. Billboards have now been added to the list of prohibited signs in Section 7.17 General Sign Standards: Subsection (I.) Prohibited Signs. No new billboards are permitted within the City of Jeffersonville.

History: The Common Council passed Ordinance NO. 2014-OR-18 that started an immediate moratorium for six months on billboards, digital billboards, and variable message signs (also known as LED signs).

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Plan Commission

The Jeffersonville Plan Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month in Room 101 at City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Ct. The Commission generally does not meet in December.

Commission members are prohibited from discussing pending dockets outside of the board's public meetings.

The Plan Commission will hold a public meeting on August 25, 2015. Click HERE for the public notice.

The Jeffersonville Board of Zoning Appeals meets at the latter of 7 p.m. or five minutes after the conclusion of the Plan Commission meeting on the last Tuesday of each month in Room 101 at City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Ct. The board generally does not meet in December.

Board members are prohibited from discussing pending dockets outside of the panel's public meetings.
